What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?

A mini-split system has two main components: an outdoor unit (compressor) and one or more indoor wall-mounted air handlers. They're connected by refrigerant lines that run through a small hole in the wall — no ductwork, no major renovation.

Mini-splits provide both heating and cooling. Most modern mini-splits are heat pumps — they work efficiently down to -25°C for heating, making them practical in Manitoba for much of the year. At the coldest temperatures (-35°C), they need supplemental heat (or you have a gas furnace running elsewhere in the house).

When Does a Mini-Split Make Sense?

  • No existing ductwork — Adding central air to a home without ducts requires major renovation. A mini-split doesn't.
  • Additions or conversions — Finishing a basement, garage, or adding a room? A mini-split is the fastest way to heat and cool it without extending ductwork.
  • Zone control — Different family members want different temperatures? Each zone has its own thermostat and works independently.
  • Supplemental cooling — Your central air handles most of the house but one room always runs hot. A single-zone mini-split fixes it.
  • High-efficiency upgrade — If you're on electric baseboard heat, a mini-split is dramatically more efficient.

Single Zone vs. Multi-Zone

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit serving one indoor unit. A multi-zone system has one outdoor unit serving multiple indoor units (up to 5 or more), each in a different room. Multi-zone costs more upfront but less than buying multiple single-zone systems.

Brands We Install

We install York and Lennox ductless systems as our primary brands. We also service Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, and other brands already installed in your home.

Installation Process

  1. Assessment — We size the system for each zone based on room dimensions and heat load.
  2. Quote — Equipment, labour, refrigerant line installation, electrical connections.
  3. Installation — Most single-zone installs take half a day. The indoor unit mounts high on the wall, refrigerant lines run through the exterior wall to the outdoor unit.
  4. Startup and testing — System tested in both heating and cooling mode.

Service and Repair

We also repair existing ductless systems — refrigerant leaks, board failures, drain line clogs, and remote control issues. All brands. Call 204-297-0664.
